Randall Atlas is America?s only architect / criminologist. Atlas received his Doctorate of Criminology from Florida State University, a Masters in Architecture from the University of Illinois, and a Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree from University of South Florida. Atlas is president of Counter Terror Design Inc., and vice-president of Atlas Safety & Security Design Inc., both based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is a registered architect in Florida, nationally accredited with National Council Architectural Registration Board (N.C.A.R.B.), and a member of the American Institute of Architects. Dr. Atlas is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) from the American Society of Industrial Security, a member of the ASIS Security Architecture and Engineering Council, and an appointed member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Premises Security Committee, which developed the new NFPA 730/ 731 premises security standards and guidelines. Atlas is a committee member of the American Society Of Testing Materials (ASTM) F33 on Corrections and Detention Facilities and the ASTM E54 Homeland Security Committee. He is a member of the Florida CPTED network, the International CPTED Association, a member of the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners, and the International Association of Counterterrorism and Security Professionals.
Dr. Atlas is a nationally recognized trainer and author on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) for the National Crime Prevention Institute (NCPI), which is part of the University of Louisville. He has conducted over 200 workshops and seminars on CPTED and Critical Infrastructure Protection around the world and has uniquely combined the fields of architecture, security, and criminology. Dr. Atlas serves as an adjunct professor in architecture and criminal justice at Florida Atlantic University College of Architecture and teaches one of the few CPTED classes in the world to architecture and criminal justice students. He also teaches criminal justice classes for Keiser University. Dr. Atlas is a Futurist and a member of the Futurist Society.
Dr. Atlas has conducted a risk vulnerability assessment security survey for major transportation systems such as the Miami-Dade Transit System, which included the rapid rail system, the bus system, garages and parking facilities. Dr. Atlas also examined MARTA, BART, Chicago and Washington DC transit systems as part of the Metro Dade Study. Dr. Atlas has been appointed to the Oklahoma City National Memorial Institute of the Prevention of Terrorism peer review panel, and was a technical assistance security consultant for U.S. HUD and subsequently conducted CPTED surveys for public housing properties around the Country. Dr. Atlas has conducted CPTED security surveys for many school environments including: Tennessee State University; Harvard University Science Building; Barry University; University of Louisville; Ohio State University; University of Miami; and the Clark Country School District in Las Vegas. Atlas has assessed hospitals and office buildings including Jackson Memorial Hospital and Trauma Center in Miami, Palm Springs Hospital, the Discovery Channel Headquarters Building in Bethesda, and the Sony headquarters building in San Diego, and many other types of buildings around the United States. Dr. Atlas has designed jails, prisons, and courthouse facilities around the Country as a consultant to various architecture firms. Dr. Atlas has conducted homeland security critical infrastructure assessments on over 100 facilities in Miami Dade County, and for several utilities and power companies within the U.S.
Atlas is a regular contributor to the Security Management Magazine, Protection of Assets Manual, Access Control Magazine, Security Technology and Design Magazine. Dr. Atlas has served as an expert witness on premises liability cases and adequacy of security in hundreds of litigation cases.
